Public speaking can be a daunting task, but with the right strategies, you can deliver a speech that captivates your audience and leaves a lasting impression. Drawing from my experience in a communications class where we analyzed speeches and practiced speaking on various topics, I'll share 10 public Speaking tips for confident and effective presentations.

1. Choose a Familiar Topic:

Select a subject or personal item that you feel passionate and knowledgeable about. Just like in my Artifact Speech about winning a painting by Doris Mixon, having a connection to your topic will boost your confidence and make your speech more engaging. I have included a .pdf of my speech below, which you can use as an example.

A girl holding a painting. The painting is of a women wearing a red dress with a corset. She is holding a blue mask up to her face. The mask covers around her eyes and goes up her forhead as two horns. Her hair is white. She is looking off to her right. The background is a black fog.In the top left corner of the painting, the fog creates a skull shape with red eyes. The painting's frame is dark black like the fog and has intentional knicks on the surface.

2. Practice and Prepare:

Don't underestimate the power of practice. Write out your speech and rehearse it several times. Research if needed to add depth to your topic. Knowing your material inside out will help you deliver it smoothly and confidently.

3. Structure Your Speech:

Craft a clear and concise structure for your speech, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Start your speech with a strong opening that includes your name, credibility, and an overview of what you'll cover.

4. Utilize Numerical Figures:

Include specific numbers in your introduction to establish credibility and give your audience something memorable to latch onto. For example, "I'm Emily Cardiel, a digital artist with 8 years of experience. Today, I'll share 3 ways to market your art."

5. Organize Your Body Paragraphs:

Stay organized and stick to the structure outlined in your introduction. Each body paragraph should cover a key point related to your topic. Consider using quotes or statistics from credible sources to support your points.

6. Engage Your Audience:

Keep your audience engaged by sharing relatable stories, asking questions, or incorporating interactive elements. This helps maintain their interest and involvement throughout your speech.

7. Appeal to Ethos, Pathos, and Logos:

Appealing to ethos (credibility), pathos (emotion), and logos (logic) helps establish a connection with your audience. Share personal anecdotes to build rapport (ethos), evoke emotions through storytelling (pathos), and use facts and evidence to support your arguments (logos).

8. Recap and Conclude:

In your conclusion, recap the main points of your speech and reinforce your credibility. End with a strong closing statement and invite questions from the audience if time permits. Always thank your audience for their time and attention.

9. Dress and Speak Professionally:

Appearances matter, so dress appropriately for the occasion. Project confidence through your posture, gestures, and tone of voice. Avoid filler words like "um" and "like" and speak clearly and confidently.

10. Try Memorizing Your Speech:

Becoming more familiar with your speech can boost your confidence. Try different memorization techniques, such as printing out your speech, handwriting it, and then practicing reading it out loud. Record your practice sessions and listen to them to assess your tone and engagement level. Experiment with methods like color-coding your notes to help you quickly find your place during your speech.

Conclusion:

Public speaking is a skill that can be honed with practice and preparation. By following these tips and investing time in crafting and delivering your speech, you'll become a more confident and effective speaker. Remember to appeal to ethos, pathos, and logos to establish credibility, connect emotionally, and persuade logically.
